Denim Day

Wednesday, April 24th, 2019 is Denim Day.

Denim Day is an opportunity for people to wear jeans to take a stand against destructive attitudes around sexual assault and sexual violence.

History

In 1992, an 18 year old student was raped by her 45 year old driving instructor. The instructor claimed that it was consensual. The case was eventually brought to the Italian supreme court which found that the encounter must’ve been consensual because the victim had been wearing blue jeans. The court stated “It is a fact of common experience that it is nearly impossible to slip off tight jeans even partly without the active collaboration of the person who is wearing them.”

The case sparked outrage worldwide, and “Denim Day” was born. Now Denim Day is an annual event where supporters wear jeans to publicly demonstrate their support for survivors and take a stance against harmful attitudes about sexual assault.
