My Sister’s House partners with Through Peace, APAPA, Compassion in Oakland, and Tuff Love to address hate crimes and incidents through self-defense training and free mental health and victim support services

What: My Sister’s House – together with Through Peace – hope to empower the Sacramento

community to stand up for their rights against any form of discrimination. During this FREE event, attendees can participate in a self-defense training and sign up to receive mental health services and victim support. Simultaneous live interpretation will be provided in Cantonese, Mandarin, Spanish, and Vietnamese.

  • My Sister’s House supports Asian and Pacific Islander and other underserved women and children impacted by domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking by providing a culturally appropriate and responsive safe haven, job training and community services.
  • Through Peace is committed to serving BIPOC marginalized communities and whose mission is to elevate public safety for vulnerable communities by providing education, resources, and empowerment.

Local community partners will be providing services/donating resources for this event and include:  Asian Pacific Islander American Public Affairs (APAPA), Compassion in Oakland, Tuff Love, and more

Why: According to the U.S. DOJ 2022 Hate Crime Incident Report, there has been a 64% increase in annual hate crimes in California since the pandemic, with 62% of the reported crimes being motivated by the victim’s race/ethnicity/ancestry. Concerns about the rise of hate are reflected in the TAAF 2023 Status Index that 1 in 2 Asian Americans reported feeling unsafe in the U.S. due to their race/ethnicity. While verbal harassment continues to make up a huge proportion (63%) of hate incidents targeting AAPI based on Stop the Asian Hate Data, physical assault comprises the second largest category with over 16%.

Who should attend: We encourage young adults and seniors to attend. This is a FREE event and FREE food will be provided. Registration link: https://www.throughpeace.org/events/sacramento
